Sugar Gliders Swoop Into Methuen, Receive More Than 800 Adoption Applications

An animal shelter got a rare influx of sugar gliders - and two hedgehogs - after their owner in Western Massachusetts surrendered them.

Sugar gliders are exotic pets in the possum family, according to the MSPCA-Angell, the rescue organization that took in 33 of the critters on Thursday, March 30.

A flood of interested adopters applied for the sugar gliders, and by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 all 33 of the furry creatures had been spoken for.

The owner likely surrendered the small creatures due to suffering from medical issues and because of the large amount of sugar gliders on the property,  said Meaghan O’Leary, director of operations at Nevins Farm, where the surrendered creatures are receiving foster care.

“We don’t often have sugar gliders in our care,” O’Leary said. “It’s also rare that we get so many into the shelter at once, so we really need adopters to step up and take these guys home.”

While some people do not consider the furry critters to be pets, they can be a great fit for the right adopters, O'Leary said.

“They’re unique and fun to take care of,” she described. “They’re also incredibly endearing, but they aren’t for everyone.”

While small in stature, the gliders still require dedicated and specific care. They are omnivores, and need to eat a combination of insects, fruits, vegetables, nectar-based food, and commercial diet.
